Welcome to Søby Camping Ærø have a lot of mills-old well as new. Almost all of the old mills are well preserved and beautyful. They can only be seen from outside but that is also exited as not two mills are alike on Ærø. Let´s start with Søby Mill which is one of the nicest and best preserved mills. It is a Dutch thatched mill from 1881. It is maintained by a fund. The next is Vitsø Mill south of Søby Near Vitsø Nor. A pumpmill from 1883 which was a replacement for an elderly Ducth pumpmill. This mill do need a larger restorement, and that started in Medium August. The Mill is the only of its kind in Danmark, it was used as a water/windmill, w.m.s that you by using wind pumped water from a low land area.. Near Søbygård is vestermill, which is one of Denmarks eldest Ducth windmills. The mill is from 1834, it was a replacement for two cornmills and it was used until the beginning of 1980. One day a year it is "The Mills Day" on that day are some of the mills open, so that you can see them inside. The 3 new mills are visible near Risemark beach. Here is the park of Ærø´s windmills. There are mills in Bregninge, Haven and Marstal. All the mills are producing energy for the people on Ærø. It gives them the ecology right electricity. Sightseeing about Søby Camping Søbygård & Vitsø: History infuses both the "Castle" and Søbygård manor. The impressive earthworks supported a royal fortress in the Middle Ages, and some parts of Søbygård date back to the 1580s - the farm buildings may be the oldest of their kind in Denmark. During the castle's days of glory, it was possible to sail across Vitsø toits foot. The lake subsequently became cut off from the sea by netural stone ridges. It was later drained artificially, and is now fertile agricultural land and an area of natural beauty. Vitsø is a protected area, and across to the land is limited to cyclists and ramblers. Søbygård is a gathering point for the islanders. Every year, the Ærø Pageant  is performed here, with up to 100 amateur actors. The main building (called the "Castle") host various exhibitions and recitals, and is also used for weddings. One of the wings contains a newly built activity hall. Skjoldnaes Lighthouse: At Ærø´s north end is a lighthouse from 1881, made of granite from Bornholm. The countryside around Skjoldnæs is beautyful and we recommend a walk to Næbbet, which is a wet area with a lot of different birds. There is a good beach for swimming. You are requested to stay on the footpaths as a lot of birds breed here.   We have one of the most beautyfully situated golf cources in the Northern part af Europe. A golf cource only 0 - 300 meters from the sea on three sides and thus almost certainly a challenge to play on. Round Ærø by bike:  A tour round Ærø by bike can start from Søby, Ærøskøbing or Marstal. The tour is 60 - 65 km. It is well marked, so that you do avoid the roads with most traffic. Ærø is high island, which also makes it a very beautyful island with a view over the Eastsea and especially over the southern sea of Funen. This does also include some hilly parts, and if you want to do the journey in one day, you must be in a fairly good condition. The journey can easy take you about 6 - 7 hours. Hills tend to be higher at the end of the journey. We wish you a good journey and you willl enjoy the beauty of the scenery and the experince. Bike cards can be bought at the campsite or in tourist bureaus. Voderup Cliff: One of the most beautiful places on Ærø is the moraine cliffs at Voderup which is truly an area you would not want to miss. A unique panorama appears before your eyes and will stay in your mind forever. The cliff stands 33 metres high and consists of several kilometers of long step-shaped terraces that link the sea with the elevated area of the island like giant steps. Pack yourself a picnic basket and take a walk along one af the terraces. You will only have to walk a short cistance before you have a spot entirely to yourself And don't forget; a spot amidst nature at it's most beautiful in Denmark.
